The Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation (DSACF) is located on the beautiful western shores of Lake Superior. We encourage private giving for the public good and foster generosity, civic engagement and inclusiveness. Guided by a volunteer board of civic leaders, the Community Foundation holds more than 390 different charitable funds, with assets exceeding $65 million. Since its inception in 1983, the foundation has distributed over $50 million in grants to nonprofit organizations and in scholarships to individuals in the region.

The Chief Operating Officer works closely with the President and is responsible for overseeing internal operations and overseeing the geographic affiliate program. The Chief Operating Officer provides leadership to a team of professionals across the Community Foundation.

General Responsibilities

1. Maintains a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in philanthropy and the community foundation field.

2. Ensures that the work of the Community Foundation meets the highest standards of quality, integrity and customer service.

3. Monitors the legislative environment and ensures compliance with National Standards for US Community Foundations.

4. Working closely with the President, maintains continuous lines of communication.

5. Ensures that all aspects of DSACF align with the strategic plan and commitment to generosity, engagement and inclusiveness.

6. Provide a supportive day-to-day leadership presence for staff including coordinating work flow.

7. Plan, direct, evaluate and work toward continuous improvement of the overall administrative, management information systems and business/financial operations of DSACF in a manner that makes the best use of available resources including personnel, technology, time, materials and finances.

8. Provides oversight to and periodically assesses the performance of the geographic affiliate field of interest funds, including their compliance with National Standards for US Community Foundations.

9. Provides leadership and oversight of DSACF’s financial operations, investments and related reporting to produce information that is accurate and consistent with generally accepted accounting practices, established internal controls and financial and investment policies.

10. Maintains DSACF high standards concerning confidentiality of grantee, scholar and donor information and conflicts of interest, among other items.

11. Supervises the Director of Finance, the Affiliate Officer(s) and Administrative Assistant and works with consultants, as needed.

12. Leads, motivates and manages staff assignments.

13. Represents the Community Foundation in the field of philanthropy and within DSACF communities.

14. Manages within a budget and maximizes its impact.

15. Participates in appropriate training provided by DSACF and other opportunities for training in the field.

16. Provides leadership and oversight of all technology systems including software and hardware systems and staff technology training to achieve computer capability for optimal performance through technological advances and efficient use of technology. Annually evaluates technology systems and makes recommendations for improvement.

17. Meets regularly and collaborates with DSACF President.

18. Completes other assignments as directed by the President.


The Chief Operating Officer reports directly to the President of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation.

Required Qualifications, Knowledge and Talents

5. Ability to work effectively with professional staff.

7. Outstanding judgment, initiative, drive and the capacity to get things done.

8. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

9. Demonstrated track record of professional success with at least five years of leadership experience in financial, technology or operational services.

10. Commitment to the DSACF values of integrity, stewardship, generosity and community and high level of personal ethics.

11. Excellent computer skills and experience, including MS Office products, database management experience and advanced personal computer skills.

Desired Education and Experience

1. Bachelor's degree in finance, business administration or equivalent; Master's degree preferred.

2. Direct experience in managing office technology and strong working knowledge of database management.

3. Financial management experience for organizations with annual budgets in excess of $2 million.

4. Investment management experience.

5. Knowledge of the area to be served and the needs of the philanthropic sector.
